India is one of the oldest countries in the world, with long and dramatic history and diverse and mysterious for Western civilization art and philosophy.

An incredible mix of traditional and colonial art

The term 'Indian art' refers to a wide variety of artworks created over the territories of modern India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Artworks created here include:

The best examples of early Indian art are stone or metal paintings which were the only media to survive local climate.

Indian art developed under influence of different religions — Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Islam. Just like in European countries, in India there are plenty of images featuring religious episodes, but instead of Christ and saints all the paintings display Buddha. In comparison to puritan Western world, Indian art freely depicted nudity and sexual relations observing it as natural and not shameful sides of human nature.

As India experienced several waves of colonization, the art developed under influence of culture of countries that were dominating. These were mostly Muslim countries and British Empire between 1757–1947. Nowadays Indian fine art develops under inevitable influence of globalization but still remains distinctive and unique.
