History of art in Italy is one of the longest in Europe. First paintings found in the territory of modern Italy were created by Etruscan civilization in 9th–2nd centuries BC. During the Roman Empire period sculpture has gained the leading position in art, and with the fall of Roman Empire and beginning of Middle Ages Byzantine and Gothic art and architecture occupied the leading place for the next several centuries making religious topics the most important for art.

Renaissance became a period to bring back Antic tradition of depicting less spiritual ideas, and the painters of that period wanted to paint people and nature in a naturalistic way, without giving a special meaning to the painting.

Italian Renaissance: 300 years of outstanding painting

During the Renaissance period which last from 13th to 16th century Italy was a world art centre and main trendsetter of the artistic world. One of the first artists to depict objects in a realistic way was Giotto whose magnificent frescoes decorated churches.

The whole Renaissance painting can be divided into several groups:

In this period were created the most precious and mysterious works like Mona Lisa, and they still remain examples of ideal artworks for modern artists.

After the end of Renaissance era the country didn't lose its important position on the world's art map. With the raise of Baroque and Rococo artistic movements in 16th–17th century Italy gave the world several world-known artists including legendary Caravaggio. In the following years Neoclassicism experienced a significant raise in Italy, and Impressionism was represented by Macchiaioli art group, Italian first Impressionists.
