Portuguese became famous in the Renaissance period, and since that time it has changed dramatically. Main ideas and the language of modern Portuguese art is now relevant to a global context, but for a long time art of this country was highly religious.

Key personalities of Portuguese painting

Portugal has always been a country with a strong influence of religion so most of famous artworks (except contemporary works) are dedicated to particular religious topic. The most known Portuguese painters of Renaissance are Jorge Afonso, Grao Vasco, Nuno Goncalves and several other. Renaissance art in Portugal was different to all other Europe — less pompous and more sober.

As an art objects we can also consider sea maps created in that time. Thank to their high accuracy maps were popular all over the Europe, and most of them were beautifully decorated and had masterfully painted miniature icons on them.

In 19th century art in Portugal developed under the strong influence of French art. The main movements of Portuguese art of that time included Naturalism, Romanticism and Realism.

List of contemporary Portuguese artists include several world-known personalities:

Since the end of 1990s Lisbon became a popular artistic destination. Dozens of private and government galleries and exhibition spaces work in the city, attracting hundreds of visitors.

Azulejo — beautiful ornamental art form

Azulejo decoration is very popular not only in Portugal but in Spain as well. This is tin-glazed ceramic tilework, mostly of blue color which is widely used to decorate walls of all kinds of public buildings and homes. Azulejo can be made as an ornament or a complicated painting, mostly showing some landscape or cityscape.

This decorative style developed since 13th century under strong Arabic influence. The first goal of azulejo was to imitate Roman mosaics but it quickly became popular as an independent decorative art style. This ornamental style is not only beautiful but practical as well: azulejo frescoes have a great possibility to keep the temperature in the houses on comfortable level.
