Main periods of American art
All history of American art can be divided into 4 groups:
- Pre-Columbian art dated 1200 B.C.–1535 A.D.;
- Indian art — 1000 B.C.–1900 A.D.;
- Colonial art which developed between 1670–1800;
- art of independent America formed after 1776.
Pre-Columbian art is a general term that describes art of the native people of North, Central and South America which existed before the European colonization. In 18th century artists mostly painted history painting and portraits, and 19th century was a time for large landscape painting development. At this time were formed famous Hudson River School, Barbizon School and Luminism. The most known representatives of these schools are Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, George Inness and Albert Bierstadt. In the end of the century American Impressionism became popular and was developed by Childe Hassam and Frank W. Benson.
The large shift in American art happened after Armory Show exhibition in 1913 where new daring Cubism, Fauvism and Futurism works of European artists were displayed. The impact was so strong that after the World War II Paris lost its status of world art centre, and New York appeared as the most important city in the world of art. American artists of early 20th century developed their own style which was called American Realism.
America is a place where Modern and Postmodern art had an exceptional development. During the 20th century all art styles that appeared in USA were founded as a revolt against existing art tradition. In the same time, thank to Santa Fe Railroad building, artists got a chance to travel to West Coast so new art groups started to work in California forming Art of the American Southwest.
Basically, each 10 years had one or several new styles or art movements. Each of them developed under the influence of global historical events like Great Depression or World Wars. Abstract Expressionism with Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko as the most known representatives or Pop-Art with Andy Warhol.
