Paintings of Erotic
Erotic art has no set definition. Art dealers and critics mostly refer all works that show sexual scenes or just nudity to erotic artworks. Thought this for of fine art is considered as something shameful and “uncomfortable”, in various forms it has existed for many centuries.
Brief history of erotic art
Erotic art developed in very different ways over the world. While in India it was ok to depict sexuality, and Japan has even a separate erotic art style (shunga), in Europe everything sexual was strictly banned by church for several centuries. The very first examples of erotic art in Europe are definitely sculptures of naked people that are dated by prehistoric times. Artworks of Ancient Greece and Rome also include a lot of sexual scenes.
During the Middle Ages the only painting where it was possible to find any nudity were the paintings of hell depicting people suffering from punishment for lust. The Renaissance has brought back antic admiration of human body, and we can see naked people on paintings created in that time. But that artworks didn't have an aim to give the painting sexual meaning — the goal was to show a perfect beauty of human body.
The end of 19th century was a period of fast growth of sexuality studies. Sigmund Freud worked on his psycho-sexual theories, and artists became braver and braver depicting nudity and sexual motives on their works. At this period artists worked mostly in Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism styles.
Gustav Courbet, thought he mostly worked with landscapes and seascapes, created a highly realistic daring series of works showing nude women. L'Origine du Monde, a painting that shows woman genitals, is probably the most known and the most shocking artist's work. Hungarian artist Mihaly Zichy created series of sketches depicting sexual relations, and French Impressionist Edgar Degas, known for his ballerinas paintings, created several works showing nude bathing women.
Twentieth century was a period when all taboos were ruined one by one. The more and more daring erotic artworks were created almost each decade, depicting homosexual relations and group sex, masturbation scenes and reworks of world-known canvas where people are shown naked or involved into sexual activities (for example, The Mona Came to Tea by Anthony Christian where artist used Mona Lisa image).
