Figurative art is the most representational fine art style from all others. This term refers to painting and sculpture that were derived from real existing objects. It is absolutely opposite to Abstract art because depicts only real objects, with no fantasy or abstraction.
Evolution of figurative art
Figurative art has always existed and was a dominating art style for many centuries, up to the end of 19th century. Main objects of figurative paintings doesn’t have to be figures of humans or animals — it can be buildings, landscapes or human made objects as well. Abandoned at the time of Abstract Expressionism, this art style started to become more popular in 1970s.
The first challenge for this style was Impressionism which made figures less important — on this style paintings we can see only shades of figures that have to give us impression but not the accurate image. Later, the development of non-representative art forms took attention of all artists who started to experiment with it.
Figurative artworks can be painted within different art movements. For example, Picasso Cubism masterpiece Les Demoiselles d’Avignon is no doubt the example of figurative art, even though it depicts people in a hardly recognizable way. Figurative art is the core of all Realism movements — from Social Realism to the Hyperrealism.
