Paintings from Turkey
When we talk about Turkish art, we mostly mean traditional crafts first and only then paintings, and this is fair enough. Art in Turkey had mostly practical purpose — for example, to decorate dishes. While in Europe and Russia during the early years artists painted angels and saints, Turkish artists didn't create religious paintings as Islam forbids to portray living creatures and especially saints.
Traditional Turkish art
Art in Turkey developed in a very different ways. Long history of a country which was a great empire and a part of other countries, faced unbelievable growth and decay periods, combines people of different religions made a serious impact on art.
The wide variety of local arts include:
- marbling and stone carving featuring traditional patterns;
- handwritten books and luxurious golden and leather book covers creation;
- leather and wood artwork, usually on clothes or furniture;
- calligraphy and tugra (sultanic cipher);
- lamps craft featuring glass and metal works;
- jewellery making a decorating.
One of the oldest Turkish paintings are miniatures that were thoroughly and accurately painted in books up to the end of 16th century. Also, many emperors took artists to Istanbul to decorate walls of churches and mosques with its peak in 16th centuries.
In the 17th century in Istanbul developed bazaar painting groups. This was a folk art movement within which artists who had their shops on bazaars created paintings on customers demand. With a simple painting depicting everyday life, this is a perfect example of primitive art.
Twentieth century was a century of unbelievable growth and development of Turkey thank to reforms and important social and political changes. In this period many artists started to experiment with style, colour and form. For example, Hoca Ali Riza is famous for his stunning Istanbul landscapes, Fikret Mualla studied in Europe and worked in Fauvism and Expressionism styles, and Turkish-American Burhan Dogancay was the world-known abstract painter.
