Unlike the other styles with set definitions, contemporary art still doesn't have a single meaning. It is mostly thought to be a successor of modernism, but no one is sure when modern art the period ended. Sometimes this style is called postmodernism, but it's not correctly actually: postmodernism term refers also to sociology, architecture, design, film industry and several other different things with different timelines.
What is contemporary art
Artists and critics still argary art era has begun aftue about this, but there are three more or less popular variants. One of them, popular between museums and curators, is considering the contemporary art as any artwork created after 1945, but art historians consider this term outdated. Someone defines it as an art created in our era or during our lifetimes. Art critics incline to the idea that the contemporer 1960s, because this period is mixing the representatives of both styles. But any art style can't be changed in the blink of an eye so there is always a transitional period.
What makes it different
During the modern era in, artists were reflecting political and social trends and historical events. Thought new tools and methods were used, artists were still believing that the art should provide answers — it was considered to do what any other institution couldn't.
By the beginning of 1960s, belief that artworks can bring back the lost meaning was lost so painting created in this period are less optimistic — post-modernism artist believe life to be meaningless thing so no meaning can't be found in art. The idea and concept become more important then skills needed to create a work.
Within the contemporary style have appeared several new styles of fine art which include:
- minimalism which was born in New York;
- extremely detailed photorealism (sometimes called hyperrealism);
- graffiti, or street art — we should thank hip-hop culture for it;
- neo-expressionism — one of the last international art movements;
- neo-pop — modern vision of pop-art.
Most pieces of contemporary art more often can be found in private collections. But there are many museums all over the world that display this type of works — for example, Tate Modern and Saatchi Gallery in London, Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburg and many other.
