Modern art is often defined as all types of fine art created between 1870-1970 (sometimes 1960). This was an era of experimentation — artists rejected all traditional views in favor of new forms, materials, techniques. This period brought a new understanding of art and place of artist in the world.
Rejection of traditional ideas
A time period when modernism was born was marked by top events that changed the world dramatically and made an influence on history of 20th century: Industrial Revolution, two world wars, extremely fast science progress, born of new media, changes in philosophy, rise of atheism etc. That made modernists believe that traditional art was no longer able to reflect mood of a changed new world.
First two thirds of 20th century have strongly influenced on art and made it relevant to the politics. During this time most of artists strongly believed in progress which can be seen from their works. Paris was a center of Western Art, and New York became an important place on the art map of the world.
The main idea of all modernism period was that art mattered: artists believed that with a help of artworks they could influence on the world and people. Given this, it is not surprising that modernism ended in 1960-70s when TV became the main thing that had influence on public opinion.
Developing entirely new types of art
The main trend of this period is an abstract art. It had an incredible rise after Cubism. In this period dozens of completely new art styles appeared. Here are just several of them:
- Social Realism with American Gothic as an icon of it;
- Art Nouveau, mostly known by architectural works of Gaudi;
- Impressionism, named after one of Claude Monet's works;
- Pop-Art, formed under the massive influence of Andy Warhol;
- Surrealism — strange and beautiful, with Salvador Dali as the most known representative.
After the modern art era started to fade in the beginning of 1960s, contemporary art that rejected all meanings of all styles started quickly conquering the world and continue doing it till now. But without a revolution modernists have made there would never be a contemporary art as we understand it now.
