All the artworks can be divided into 2 groups: canvas you enjoy watching in the art gallery and paintings you can easily hang on the wall of your living room. Most of the landscapes refer to both of this groups — they don't portray anything you wouldn't like your children to see and stay a bright expression of artist's talent and delight of the beauty of nature.
A technique of depicting the natural beauty
Landscape art is one of the oldest art styles existing in the world. The earliest artworks that depicted only nature with no humans refer to 1500 B.C. and are found in frescos of Minoan Civilization. In some periods it was overshadowed by techniques of portraying people in Renaissance times or religious topics in Medieval period, but has never been absolutely forgotten and abandoned.
Landscapes don't simply show elements of nature — mountains, forests, rivers or valleys. They always show a weather and can communicate feelings and mood. The most commonly used way to do it is to paint sky in different colours. A heavy dark gray sky tells not only about late autumn or the rain which is about to start but about artist's feelings or sentiment in society as well.
The two main tradition in drawing landscapes count thousands of years and come from Chinese art and Western painting. The views can be depicted from real objects with different degrees of accuracy (or no accuracy at all if we talk about abstract art examples) or show the imaginary views — for examples, illustrations to myths. The landscapes can be made in different styles and with a help of different materials — oil, watercolour, acrylic paints, ink etc.
In Asia, Europe and America artists united to form schools and art movements like:
- Hudson River School in the USA with Thomas Cole as a founder;
- Southern School in China which existed for 8 centuries;
- Kano School — one of the most known representatives of Japanese painting;
- Dusseldorf School of Painting that existed in XIX-XX centuries and involved about 4 000 artists.
The landscape technique has several related techniques that focus on particular elements: seascapes, a part of marine art, depict seas and oceans; cityscapes show urban landscapes; cloudscapes put all the attention into the sky.
