Love and romantic feelings have always been and will always stay on the top of human interest. As long as we are able to feel and fall in love, this style of art will attract our attention and make us feel a wide range of emotions while looking on the painting.
Love and romance motives shouldn't be mixed with romantic art which refers to Romanticism — an art style popular in Europe between 1800-1850. The main idea of Romanticism was to place the emphasis on very different comparing to love feelings: fear, awe, horror. The works of that time show mostly nature or historic events and leave the strong feeling of inevitability.
Development of romance art
Romance artworks can be performed in various styles, and we can see examples of it in many world-known incredible canvases:
- Dance at Bougival by Pierre-August Renoir, created in Impressionist style;
- The Storm by French artist Pierre August Cot — the pure example of Academic Classicism;
- The Kiss by Gustav Klimt, one of the most-known artists of Symbolism.
Very often romance artworks include erotic motives, and people displayed on a picture can sometimes be displayed naked.
While nowadays love art exists in different forms (not only as paintings, drawings and sculpture but also as photographs and performance art) with very brave and even provocative scenes, artists of previous years, especially in Middle Ages, had to follow more strict moral rules.
As Christianity observed love passion as a sin and religious motives and feelings were thought to be the only theme worth painting artists couldn't paint real people in love. The Renaissance with its admiration of physical beauty brought great relief and great possibilities for painters.
Rococo was one of the art styles that showed love motives in an easy and playful way — for example, The Swing by Jean-Honore Fragonard or his another work The Secret Meeting shows love relationship as something light, easy and fun: on his paintings people are smiling, and all works are performed in light creamy colours.
